Hard Work Pays Off

Basically if you are a Gore, you play football

I am Tom, I am from England but currently living in Greece and I love to play football.

My Grandad played, my Dad played, all my Uncles played and my older Brother and younger brother play... Basically if you are a Gore, you play football.

I started playing in the garden with my brother. He was my hero!  I would watch him play for his team and I wanted to be just like him.

We were very blessed to have parents that would take us to games and training. They knew how much we loved football and they would sacrifice their own time to take us. I am so grateful for them and for their love for us!

I would go with my dad and my brothers to watch our favourite team. I loved being at the stadium. The atmosphere was always amazing!

I have played since I was 6 and I have played for many different teams. However when I reached 18 I decided to put it aside for 2 years so I could live in Greece and be a missionary… but when I get back to England I will play again!

I have learnt a lot from playing football. I have learnt a lot about team work and how we can’t do it all alone.  Every player must do his part. Every player plays an important role. It is the same with Gods team; we are His team. Though He doesn’t force us to be on His team, He still encourages us to choose to be. His team never loses and when we understand that we will always choose to play for Him. He knows that we are trying and He is trying to help us see that we can become even better. He needs us to be our best selves, to do all we can and to keep progressing!

Heavenly Father is like our manager. The only difference with Him and any other is that He is perfect. He cares about us and want us to succeed. He knows the opposition and He will do all He can to support us in overcoming them. Our Heavenly Father knows the opposition is strong and He will do all He can to help us be stronger.

In football we have rules. Rules keep us from danger and in the game. If you break the rules, you receive a punishment. It is similar with our Heavenly Father. God gives us rules. He calls them Commandments. He wants us to be happy and to live good lives and by following His commandments we can do that. Keeping His Commandments is how we become strong especially when we face difficulties. When we keep His Commandments we become more like Him. That is why He gave them! He loves us and wants us to be as strong as possible.

However we sometimes break His Commandments. God promises to bless those that keep His Commandments. However we obstruct ourselves from receiving blessing when we fail to keep them.

For me something that football doesn’t offer but is the greatest gift God has given us is the Savior, Jesus Christ. He makes it possible for us to overcome our weakness and change from our old ways. We can repent and receive again the blessing our Heavenly Father is anxiously waiting to give us!

Although football brings a lot of happiness, Jesus Christ is the only way to real and lasting happiness.

I am Tom, I love my family and friends, I play football… and I am a Mormon
